I appreciate you for your website valuable, and best contents I am a student and a member of VANK living in South Korea. VANK is a non-governmental organization and also a voluntary organization. VANK consists of elementary, middle and high school students who provide correct information about Korea to international textbook publishing companies and publishers. I just want to let you know about your website which has a serious potential problem which may cause serious diplomatic crisis. We, Korean, were quite surprised to find your website describe Son Gi-jeong, Korea's first medal-winning Olympian, as "Kitei Son, JPN" which is incorrect. Please refer the following in your website ( http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0115025.html ) --------------------------------------------------------------- HEROES > KITEI SON, Title: Kitei Son --------------------------------------------------------------- Such an distorted understanding of Korea's first medal-winning Olympian in a well known website as yours raise a serious wound for Korean, our parents, grandparents and ancestors. since many people read your publishing, as well as we regard you as one of the world's best. Restoreing Korea's first medal-winning Olympian from "Kitei Son, JAPAN " into "Son Gi-jeong, KOREA" is not simply a question of changing the name and nationality errors. It is rather a part of national effort by the Korean people to erase the legacy of Japanese Imperialism and to redress the unfairness that has resulted from it. When Korea was occupied by Japan (1910-1945), Son Gi-jeong competed for the Japanese team in the 1936 summer Olympics, and was forced by the Japan to use Japanese name "Kitei Son". However, Son Gi-jeong refused to sign his names in Japanese during the Olympics. and When interviewers asked him about his country, he would clarify that Korea is his mother country, not Japan. Unfortunately, when a country dominates another, the first thing lost is the truth. It is equally true that those who control a country also control its history. Such was the case of Korea, when it was occupied by Japan (1910-1945) From that time on, Korea had no chance at all of showing to the world its true history. Japan now controlled the country, so it also controlled its history. The Japanese completely rewrote Korean history, and even Koreans themselves were forced to learn a very distorted version. Korean historians had not yet had the chance to publish works about Korea in English and, when they finally did, the Japanese versions had become firmly entrenched in Western societies. To this day, the Japanese version of Korea history is taught as fact in many Western institutions of higher learning. For your reference, you can see scientific background below website: ¡Ø ¡æ Fact and fallacies Korea in international textbooks http://www.prkorea.com/english/textbook/main.html ¡Ø ¡æ Truth in scholarship http://www.prkorea.com/english/textbook/maintruth.html ¡Ø ¡æ Korea history http://www.prkorea.com/history/history.html We know that you endeavor in many ways to understand other cultures and countries meeting the 21st century (globalization, information-oriented are going on in 21st century). Especially, I think that the contents published by your company contribute greatly to many students understanding of other countries cultures. As a member of VANK, I urge you to use "Son Gi-jeong, Korea" to describe Korea's first medal-winning Olympian in your website. We would be grateful for your explanation. VANK's desires are that students all over the world can experience correct Korean history and culture by our voluntary effort, taking this opportunity and then sharing dreams and friendship with the rest of the world. Sincerely yours. * Contact to VANK eastsea@prkorea.org "Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches." - [Matthew] - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VANK stands for - ¡®Voluntary Agency Network of Korea¡¯, a civilian international exchange association in Korea.
